John Wagner, Co-founder of Cycas Hospitality, wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Co-founder and extended-stay pioneer

This March, John Wagner, partner and co-founder of Cycas Hospitality, was presented with the industry inspiration award at the Serviced Apartment Awards 2018.

With over 40 years’ experience in the hotel industry – 37 specialising in extended-stay – John has been instrumental in every stage of the sector’s growth and was responsible for bringing the branded extended-stay concept to Europe 10 years ago.

Bringing American hotel brands to Europe

In 2008 he opened the first Staybridge Suites outside North America in Liverpool – winner of the Awards’ best property 71+ units category – and joined forces with Eduard Elias to found Cycas Hospitality. Now one of the largest extended-stay hotels operators in the UK, the company recently opened its first property in mainland Europe and has ambitious plans to roll out the concept across the continent.

John Wagner said: “I am truly humbled to have received this accolade. Those in the shortlist are not just industry heavyweights; they are people I greatly admire, and to be recognised by my peers in the same year as Cycas Hospitality turns 10 is really special.

“As the demand for accommodation evolves, extended-stay is changing the way we travel. Having worked in this sector for most of my career and translated the concept for the European market a decade ago, I can see the potential for growth is bigger than ever. Most importantly, I love what I do and am excited to continue this journey with my team of Cycadettes. Together we’ll continue to provide positively outrageous service and ensure every customer leaves with a smile.”
